How to Write a CV With No Experience

Writing your first CV can feel daunting, especially when every job seems to ask for experience you don't have yet. The good news? Everyone starts somewhere — and a well-structured CV can get you noticed even with zero work experience.

1. Start With a Strong Personal Statement
Your personal statement sits at the top of your CV and is your chance to make a great first impression. Keep it to 3–4 sentences and focus on who you are, what you're studying or have studied, and what kind of role you're looking for.
Example: "Motivated and detail-oriented recent graduate with a degree in Business Management. Passionate about customer service and eager to bring strong communication and organisational skills to a fast-paced retail environment."
2. Lead With Education
When you don't have work experience, your education is your strongest asset. List your most recent qualification first and include:
- School or university name
- Qualification and subject
- Grades (if you're proud of them!)
- Relevant modules or projects
3. Include Any Voluntary or Unpaid Experience
Volunteering, school projects, sports teams, or helping out at a family business all count. Employers want to see that you're proactive and have transferable skills — it doesn't have to be paid work.
4. Highlight Your Skills
Create a dedicated skills section and think about what you're genuinely good at. Consider:
- Communication and teamwork (from group projects or clubs)
- IT skills (Microsoft Word, Google Docs, social media)
- Languages
- Organisation and time management
5. Use an ATS-Friendly CV Template
Many employers use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to filter CVs before a human even reads them. An ATS-friendly template ensures your CV gets through the filter and into the right hands. Avoid fancy graphics, tables, or unusual fonts — keep it clean and simple.
6. Tailor Your CV for Every Application
Don't send the same CV to every employer. Read the job description carefully and mirror the language they use. If they mention "teamwork" and "attention to detail", make sure those phrases appear naturally in your CV.
7. Keep It to One Page
With no experience, one page is plenty. A concise, well-organised CV is far more impressive than a padded-out two-pager.
